In this article, the leading etiological factor of periodontitis is the microflora of dental plaque (plaque microflora) formed on the pellicle of the tooth in the area of the dentoalveolar groove. The pathogenic effect of microflora may manifest itself due to its excessive accumulation in plaque or with a change in the composition of microflora. In these cases, gram-negative microorganisms, fusobacteria and spirochetes mainly appear.
