Esophageal cancer is cancer that develops in the esophagus, which is the long, hollow tube that runs from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus helps the body move ingested food from the back of the throat to the stomach for digestion. Esophageal cancer usually begins in the cells that line the esophagus. Esophageal cancer can develop anywhere in the esophagus. Men are more sensitive than women. Esophageal cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Incidence rates vary in different regions. Esophageal cancer is more common in some areas, possibly due to smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as specific dietary habits and obesity.
